Peer Pressure and Sex Education

Peer pressure can be defined to include any type of behaviour that is motivated by the desire to be part of the larger group of peers. This pressure could be the positive aspect of wanting to blend in with a group of exceptional students and wanting to fit into a particular social context. In this video, the student is being pressured into watching a type of pornographic film.

Peer Pressure and Mental Strength

In this clip the commentary from the parent is noteworthy. With proper guidance from the teachers and parents, students will definitely be better equipped to deal with the various pressures and temptations that are bound to present themselves in their lives.

Using Reverse Psychology to Win

When kids are told they cant do something - they often try to do that very thing. How can a teacher/parent use this to modify child behaviour?

Stephanie gets offended when the guys say that she is a chatterbox and needs to be more quiet and listen more too. This starts of a spree of silent treatment which the guys cannot handle and plead for the old Stephanie back.

Starving oneself because of low self esteem

This happens more often that not in the lives of girls. With the aim of keeping pace with one's peers, kids sometimes go to extreme lengths to create an image of themselves which is often a mixture of fantasy and fiction.

The Love of the extended Family

Every Child needs people who will love them unconditionally. That love acts as a great support to the child because when they mess up (which they are certain to do) they will surely know that they have many people who will love them unconditionally.

The First Day of School

For parents and children, the first day of school is a stressful time when expectations meet with reality. When imagination becomes real. How far these sometime opposing forces display themselves can meet with sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartfelt emotions.

Deep Reading for Deep Knowledge

In this clip, the teacher is trying to probe the students to test a number of things. These include, reading levels, comprehension of the specific text and understanding of the subtle meaning hidden in the text. As one thinks more and more about a particular text, new meaning shines out and illumines the entire discussion.

Not recognizing your own kids

How often has a parent mixed up the identity of an identical twin? I know of cases when kids pranked their parents by faking their own identity but never of a parent not recognizing their own children.

Other people's kids can sometimes be annoying

We always see the defects in the children of other people but never notice the defects on our own children. If we could see each child as if they were our own, faults and all - that would go a long way to better teacher/parent/student relations.

Motivation through Humour

I had a teacher like this who used to tell jokes that only he thought were funny. We students often laughed - not at the jokes but at our teacher. He was a great guy though and we did not have the heart to tell him the truth.

When students mock the teacher

The teacher should, by his/her own behaviour, engender a sense of respect in his students. Respect can never be demanded, it has to be commanded.

Taking a class because of the company

How many of us have taken college classes because of the presence of a particular person whose affection we wanted to attract.

Learning is the prize

Many students ask of the utility in learning and education. Indeed this is a very valid question to ask. Beyond the book knowledge that is crammed into the minds of our students, how are they to relate what they learn to everyday life? What is the motivation behind knowledge? There are a few special kids who are intrinsically motivated and value knowledge for its own sake.

Motivating young kids to excel

For most kids, the loving encouragement of the parents acts as a wonderful propellant in the child's creative exploration of their talents. But do parents really believe that their kids can be truly great - or is it simply a matter of wishful thinking?

Unexpected Sex Education Class for kids

Sex Education for children often starts long before the formal talk about the birds and the bees. Curious kids are eager to experiment and explore their sexuality. But what happens when you walk in on your parents having sex?

The Ideal Teacher for the ideal Student

In order for education to flourish, a combination of the ideal teacher and the ideal student is necessary. When one of these factors is missing - education will not reach its potential. When both are missing, the results can be disastrous.

Differentiation for Differing Learning Styles

I was heartbroken when the news of Robin Williams death came out. He acted in so many movies that had a deep impact on my life. In this move - 'Dead Poets Society', the role of a teacher in coming down to the level of the students, understanding their problems, tailoring his teaching towards their own unique situation is highlighted.

Classroom Environment and Guidance of the Teacher

In this scene from 'The School of Rock' - the teacher sets the tone of the class interactions and also gives direction regarding the physical environment - all while acting as a motivator, guide, and friend.

Reinforcement in the classroom

In the movie Dangerous Minds, many issues regarding the approach to take when teacher students who may be considered to be 'at risk' are highlighted. A good teacher will take into account the specific needs of the students and tailor an approach to learning best situated to the demands of the situation.

Sex Education and the meaning of life

With some children, sex education also brings up the concepts of the creation of biological life, but also some ideas regarding the meaning of life in general. It is natural for enquiring minds to want to probe deeper and find out if there is any meaning in the seemingly endless rat race that we seem to be involved with.

Teaching Fatherhood to young kids

It is interesting to see how perceptions have changed through generations. Perceptions regarding important issues that shape our behaviour are passed on to generations through a variety of methods.

Teaching male children about female issues

Although this video does not deal directly with younger children, still the idea that young boys are inadequately equipped with the knowledge of the issues that their mothers and sisters go through is very evident in this video.

Teaching Children the Consequences of their actions

Discipline does not need to be something that has a negative connotation. In fact, discipline, if done correctly acts as an outlet of love and not a method for a parent to vent his own frustration. The true test of discipline is this: Does it effect the desired outcome and does it let the child understand (maybe not at the time of the discipline) that the act of discipline is only to lead to his/her own good?

Teaching children good manners

Our daily interactions with those around use fashion the images that people have of us and us towards ourselves. Proper telephone manners help a child learn respect for others and more importantly, respect for oneself.

Ritalin and its treatment for Chlidren

My personal view is that physicians prescribe Ritalin too frequently and without sufficient consideration to the needs and holistic situation of the child. I am sure that the use of this drug may be necessary in certain cases, but its widespread use has caused more harm than good.

Obsessive Compulsive disorder in children

This is a very serious psychological issue that needs to be understood and addressed. Children who suffer from OCD need to be treated with respect, understanding and patience. A well equipped teacher will do well to keep him/herself fully abreast of the current research regarding OCD in young children.

What is a typical day for a teacher?

All our experience of school and our teachers are unique to us - yet there are some things which are common to all. As students, we only see...
